Sam Winternheimer is an active bassist and educator. He is making his return to Indianapolis after seven years of studying and performing across the United States.

Sam received his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University. During this time, he studied with world-renowned bassist and Director of Jazz Studies, Rodney Whitaker.  While at Michigan State, Sam performed with the premier jazz octet, Octet I, as well as various other ensembles. Additionally, Sam performed around the state of Michigan with Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Derrick Gardner, Randy “Uncle G” Gelispie, Tim Froncek, Diego Rivera, and various others. He also co-led a group at the Lansing Jazz Fest and performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Upon graduation, Sam continued his studies at Florida State University, as teaching assistant for jazz bass professor, Rodney Jordan. Samuel taught a university big band, private undergraduate lessons, jazz combo, and middle school ensemble. He performed with the top ensembles at Florida State, including the top big band.  During this time, Sam performed extensively around the Southeastern United States. Some of these performances include: a sold-out weekend with the Kevin Bales Quartet at the Jazz Corner, a performance with SNL and Wicked alum, Ana Gasteyer, and with Davis Gaines, longtime Phantom from The Phantom of the Opera. He has

 

performed as sideman and leader at clubs such as Churchill Grounds and The Velvet Note in Atlanta and B Sharp’s Jazz Cafe in Tallahassee, FL. Sam also serve as the bassist for the Bill Peterson Trio, led by the Professor of Jazz Piano at the FSU College of music. Sam is featured on “By His Grace”, on Bill Peterson’s All Heart.

After receiving his Master’s degree, Sam moved to New Orleans to perform and absorb the culture of one of America’s greatest music cities. During this time, he played in some of the premier clubs, venues, and festivals, such as the Jazz Playhouse at the Royal Sonesta Hotel and the Bayou Boogaloo Festival. Additionally, he played electric bass throughout Louisiana and Texas as member of Sean Ardoin’s band, a fourth generation zydeco accordionist, singer, and drummer.

Since moving to Indianapolis, Sam has performed in some of Indianapolis’ great music venues, including the Chatterbox Tavern and The Hi-Fi.

He currently serves as bass instructor and combo director at Eastern Illinois University. Additionally, he is the instructor of electric and jazz bass for the Quattro String Academy, alongside members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
